How to Transfer Binance 2FA to a New Phone After Switching

How to transfer Google Authenticator and other 2FA methods linked to Binance to a new device after switching phones.

Getting a new phone is exciting, but many people hit a wall afterward — they can't log in to Binance because the Google Authenticator codes are still on the old phone. This is an extremely common issue. Fortunately, there are solutions. If you don't yet have a Binance account, register on Binance and develop the habit of backing up your authenticator from the start. Existing users, make sure you've downloaded the Binance APP on your new phone.

Why the Authenticator Doesn't Automatically Transfer

Google Authenticator stores verification code data locally by default — it won't follow you to a new phone. Even if you install Google Authenticator on the new phone and log in with the same Google account, the codes may not be there unless you previously enabled cloud sync manually.

So you must prepare before switching phones. Here are two scenarios.

Scenario 1: Old Phone Is Still Available

If your old phone still works, this is the easiest situation.

Method A: Export Directly from the Authenticator

  1. Open Google Authenticator on the old phone
  2. Tap the menu (three dots) in the upper right
  3. Select "Transfer accounts" then "Export accounts"
  4. Check your Binance account
  5. A QR code appears on screen
  6. Scan this code with the new phone's Google Authenticator
  7. Done — the new phone now has it

Method B: Re-bind in Binance

  1. Log in to Binance on the old phone
  2. Go to "Security Settings" then "Google Authenticator"
  3. Select "Change" or "Reset"
  4. Follow the prompts to re-scan and bind on the new phone
  5. Enter the verification code from the new phone to complete the switch

This method is essentially going through the binding process again.

Scenario 2: Old Phone Is Gone

Lost, broken, or already sold — without the old phone, you'll need Binance's manual review process.

Using the Backup Key

When you first bound Google Authenticator, Binance gave you a backup key (typically 16 alphanumeric characters). If you saved it:

  1. Open Google Authenticator on the new phone
  2. Select "Manual entry"
  3. Enter your Binance account name and the backup key
  4. Complete the addition

It's that simple. This is why the backup key is extremely important.

No Backup Key — Submit a Reset Application

  1. Open the Binance login page
  2. Enter your credentials normally
  3. At the verification code screen, tap "Security verification unavailable"
  4. Select "Google verification unavailable"
  5. The system will ask you to submit identity verification materials

Materials needed:

  • Photos of both sides of your ID
  • Selfie holding ID with handwritten date
  • Registration email confirmation
  • Recent transaction or deposit screenshots (if available)

After submission, wait for review — typically 2-7 business days. Withdrawals are restricted during review, but assets are safe.

After Review Approval

Once the old authenticator is unbound, set up a new one:

  1. Log in to the Binance APP
  2. Go to Security Settings
  3. Enable Google Authenticator
  4. Make sure to save the backup key this time!
  5. Scan with the new phone to complete binding

New users who register on Binance should complete this step immediately.

Preventing This Issue in the Future

Enable Google Authenticator Cloud Backup

Google Authenticator now supports account sync:

  1. Open Google Authenticator
  2. Tap the profile icon in the upper right
  3. Sign in to your Google account and enable sync

Now switching phones with the same Google account automatically restores all codes.

Always Save Backup Keys

Every time you bind an authenticator, write down the key on paper or save it in an encrypted notes app. This is your last line of insurance.

Bind Multiple Verification Methods

Enable SMS verification and email verification in addition to Google Authenticator on Binance. This way, even if the authenticator has issues, you have other ways to log in. Set these all up at once after you download the Binance APP, in the Security Center.

Consider Using Authy

Authy is an alternative to Google Authenticator with built-in cloud backup and multi-device sync. Using it eliminates the phone-switch verification code loss problem entirely.

FAQ

Q: Are my funds safe during the authenticator reset?

A: Yes. During review, both trading and withdrawals are restricted — nobody can operate on your assets.

Q: How long does review take after submitting materials?

A: Typically 2-7 business days. With complete and clear materials, it's usually done within 3 days.

Q: Old phone screen is cracked and I can't read the codes. What do I do?

A: Try connecting to a display for mirror output, or attempt to export the authenticator to the new phone. If truly unreadable, go through the reset application process.

Q: Does Microsoft Authenticator have the same issue when switching phones?

A: Same principle, but Microsoft Authenticator supports iCloud or Microsoft account cloud backup. If enabled beforehand, just restore after switching phones.

Q: Can I use Binance verification codes on two phones?

A: Yes. When binding the authenticator, scan the QR code with both phones simultaneously. Both will generate correct verification codes.
